Storytelling, Branding & the Crocodile Brain Challenge (S16E3)

This Week On The Blox

The competition heats up as the Bloxers put their branding strategies to the test in the second major exercise. After game-changing consultations, they refine their messaging and approach, stepping into the next round with new strategies and fresh confidence to make their branding and storytelling unbeatable.

But just as they start gaining momentum, the next Blox-Off throws a curveball—a grueling pop quiz that shakes up the leaderboard in unexpected ways. With the pressure mounting, every move counts as the Bloxers fight to stay ahead. Who will rise, and who will fall?

It all depends on who can nail their branding and incorporate these key takeaways into their business.

The Crocodile Brain is Filtering You Out

The human brain is constantly bombarded with information, and to manage the overload, it filters out anything that doesn’t seem urgent or relevant. This instinctual “crocodile brain” is quick to dismiss ideas that don’t immediately register as important. When pitching your startup—whether to investors, customers, or partners—you need to present your message in a way that captures attention right away. If your pitch doesn’t spark curiosity, solve a problem, or evoke emotion, it’s getting marked as spam.

Context Controls the Narrative

You don’t get to decide how your message is received—your audience does. Every person processes information based on their existing beliefs, experiences, and the situation they’re in at that moment. If you ignore this and push your agenda without understanding the context in which people are hearing your pitch, it can make you come across as out of touch, difficult, or even untrustworthy. Adapting your message to align with where your audience is coming from makes it far more likely to land effectively.

Perception and Reputation Drive Decisions

People don’t just buy products or invest in businesses—they buy into trust and confidence. When someone considers your brand, they’re subconsciously asking:

  • Do I believe this business can actually solve my problem?
  • Do their values align with mine?
  • Does buying from them feel safe, or is it too risky?

A strong reputation helps answer these questions before they even arise. If people perceive your brand as trustworthy, competent, and aligned with their needs, they’ll be far more likely to engage with it.

Branding Shapes Reputation Over Time

A great reputation doesn’t happen by accident—it’s the result of consistent branding, strategic messaging, and patience. Think of branding as a long-term investment in how people perceive you. Just as classical conditioning trains people to associate certain feelings with brands (e.g., luxury with Rolex, adventure with Red Bull), your brand must consistently reinforce its core message over time. Every piece of content, interaction, and experience shapes the way your audience sees you.

Consistency is the Key to Influence

Your brand’s voice, visuals, and messaging need to work together seamlessly—otherwise, you’ll confuse your audience and weaken your reputation. If your tone is playful in one place but overly formal in another, or if your visuals don’t match your messaging, people won’t know what to expect from you. A clear, cohesive brand identity makes it easier for people to recognize, trust, and connect with your startup. The more consistent you are, the more influence you’ll have in shaping how people perceive you.
