Organic & Paid Social Media for Small Businesses (S14E2)

This Week On The Blox

The very first challenge kicks off with a numbers-heavy exercise that has everyone crunching digits as they calculate the lifetime value of each client—a critical, but brain-bending task. After their consultations, the Bloxers fine-tune their strategies, learning how to leverage the power of social media and paid ads for their specific needs. With only so much time in the day, it’s a sprint to the finish—aka, it’s time for the first Blox-Off, which focuses on each contestant’s social media game plan, and let’s just say, not everyone was prepared for what came next. In a surprise twist, the rankings are shaken up, leaving everyone on edge. Tomorrow, the gloves are coming off, and you won’t want to miss what happens next!

With formulas flying, the tension in this episode is high, but the real challenge lies in how each business will take those insights and apply them to their unique social media and PPC strategies.

Organic and paid social media are essential tools for small businesses, but knowing how to balance them is key. Organic social media helps build brand awareness, foster trust, and create meaningful relationships with your audience over time. It's a long-term strategy that relies on valuable content, engagement, and consistency to build a loyal community. However, organic growth can be slow and, at times, hard to scale.

This is where paid social media comes in. Paid ads allow small businesses to reach a broader, more targeted audience in a shorter amount of time, driving traffic, leads, and sales quickly. By combining both organic and paid strategies, small businesses can maximize their reach, engage their audience, and convert more customers. It’s critical to understand that while organic efforts build a solid foundation, paid social is often the fuel that accelerates growth and turns engagement into measurable results.

Social media is about connection, not sales

Social media isn’t just a place for non-stop advertisements and promotional content; it’s about building meaningful relationships, encouraging interaction, and fostering a genuine sense of community. If you use social platforms primarily to engage with your audience, rather than focusing solely on sales, you create an atmosphere where trust and loyalty grow naturally. People don’t log in to social media to see endless ads—they want connection, inspiration, and entertainment. By crafting content that speaks to these needs, you’re building a relationship centered on value, not just selling a product.

Utilize the 80/20 rule

One tried-and-true approach is the 80/20 rule: 80% of your posts should focus on delivering value through helpful tips, insights, and community-focused content, while only 20% should be promotional, directly marketing your product or service. This balance ensures your social presence is engaging and informative rather than just a constant sales pitch.

Don’t focus on profitability first

Early on in your business, profitability might not be the most important goal. The focus should be on refining your product, improving the customer experience, and figuring out the best way to sell it. Over time, as your product gets better and customer satisfaction increases, repeat business will naturally follow. At the same time, your customer acquisition costs will drop, thanks to the social proof you build—through testimonials, reviews, and a strong online presence—making it easier to attract new customers with less effort.

Tailor your content based on the platform

It’s crucial to understand the nuances of each platform and tailor your content accordingly. What works on Instagram might not work on LinkedIn, and each platform has its own audience with specific expectations. Adjusting your approach to fit the platform helps create a more engaged and loyal following.

Collect data, measure it, learn, repeat

Relying on data-driven metrics is essential to monitor your progress. Numbers like cost-per-click (CPC) and customer acquisition cost (CAC) give you tangible insights into whether your marketing is effective. These metrics help you measure success and link your efforts to actual results, especially when tracking paid campaigns and their impact on your sales.
